What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files (.txt) send by the web server and stored on a user’s computer (most often on the hard drive). The cookie parameters allow the information they contain to be read only by the server that created them. Cookies are used most often in the case of counters, surveys, e-stores, sites that require login, ads and to monitor the activity of visitors.
What are the functions of a cookie?
Cookies contain different information about the user of a given web page and the history of the user’s visits to the site. Thanks to them, the owner of the server who sent the cookies may easily know the IP address of the user, and check, for instance, the pages the user browsed before visiting his site. Moreover, the server owner may check what browser the user is using and whether there was no error information displayed while viewing the page. It should be noted, however, that the data are not related to specific individuals browsing the sites but only with the computer connected to the Internet where the cookie is stored (the IP address is used for this purpose).
How do we use the information from the cookies?
Usually, the data are used for automatic recognition of a specific user by the server, which then is able to generate a page dedicated to that user. This, for instance, allows one to customize web services and sites, and handle the login function and some contact forms.
However, the user may change the settings of his browser so that cookie files are not stored on his hard drive or are automatically deleted after a predefined period of time. Therefore, these settings can be changed in such a way so that they block the automatic handling of cookies in the web browser settings or give information about each placement of the cookies on the website user’s device. Unfortunately, a consequence of this modification may be problems with displaying of some of the websites and the unavailability of some services.
